His father, al-Yaman was from the Meccan Banu Abs tribe but after killing someone he left Mecca for Yathrib, allying himself with the Banu al-Ash-hal tribe into which he married. The restrictions on his returning to Mecca were eventually lifted and he divided his time between Mecca and his preferred residence in Yathrib. This was how Hudhayfah had a Meccan origin but a Yathribite upbringing. Prior to the hijra a delegation from the Abs tribe, including al-Yaman, announced their acceptance of Islam. Hudhayfah grew up in a Muslim household and was taught by his parents who were among the first Muslims in Yathrib. Hudhayfah longed to meet Muhammad and from an early age he followed whatever news there was about him. He eventually journeyed to Mecca where he met Muhammad and inquired if he was a muhajir or an Ansari. Muhammad told him "If you wish you may consider yourself among the muhajirin, or if you wish you may consider yourself one of the Ansar. Choose whichever is dearer to you" Hudhayfah replied "Well, I am an Ansari. O Rasulullah".

Өзінің кішкенен жасына қарамай Ухуд шайқасына әкесімен бірге қатысады. Осы шайқаста әкесі мушриктер қолынан қаза тапты.

At Medina Hudhayfah became an intimate of Muhammad, participating in all the military engagements except Badr. He participated in the battle of Uhud with his father. Before the battle, Muhammad left al-Yaman, Hudhayfah's father, and Thabit ibn Waqsh with the other non-combatants because they were both quite old. As the fighting intensified, al-Yaman and his friend decided that despite their age they did not want to miss the opportunity to participate. They quickly prepared for battle and were soon in the thick of the fighting. Thabit ibn Waqsh was killed at the hands of the mushrikin. The father of Hudhayfah, however was set upon by some Muslims who did not recognize him. As they attacked him, Hudhayfah cried out: "My father! My father! It's my father!"
No one heard him and al-Yaman was killed in error. Grieved as he was, Hudhayfah told his fathers killers:

After Muhammad's death, the Khalifah often sought his advice concerning their activities but he remained tight-lipped. Umar was only able to find out indirectly who the hypocrites were by monitoring Hudhayfah’s attendance at the funeral prayer following the death of a Muslim. If Hudhayfah did not attend Umar refrained from performing the funeral prayer for that person. Once Umar asked Hudhayfah if any of his governors was a munafiq. Hudhayfah told him that one was but declined to inform whom. Hudhayfah later said that shortly after their conversation Umar dismissed the person as if he had been guided to him.

Muslims continued their siege for many days and were getting tired. Ali bin Abi Talib and Az-Zubair bin ‘Awwam proceeded with ‘Ali swearing that he would never stop until he had either stormed their garrisons or been martyred like Hamza.
