For the 2006 fiscal year, the University spent $315 million on research. The primary recipients of this funding were the School of Computer Science ($100.3 million), the [[Software Engineering Institute]] ($71.7 million), the Carnegie Institute of Technology ($48.5 million), and the Mellon College of Science ($47.7 million). The research money comes largely from federal sources, with federal investment of $277.6 million. The federal agencies that invest the most money are the [[National Science Foundation]] and the [[United States Department of Defense|Department of Defense]], which contribute 26% and 23.4% of the total university research budget respectively.<ref name="fact"/>
