After the reformation, the north regions of Netherlands began practicing Protestantism. But, emperors like Charles V were against to this new religion. And, after the Peace of Westphalia, Netherlands became independent country. Hence, Protestantism came into position by being a main type of religion. Catholic Church responded to this reformations and situations in the North Europe by developing arts to use it like propaganda. Thus, there was created new style of arts – baroque. According to Hodge (2011), «In Italy, France and Spain, baroque continued to evolve as an emotional, spectacular, strong sense of style» (p. 44-45). They wanted to entice people by expressive emotions. After these changes, Protestant followers wanted to make something unique, too. And, Netherland Protestants become to draw beautiful masterpieces to support their religion. Owing to Protestantism, in XVII century started Golden Age of Dutch painting. If Baroque artists painted Christian way of life or Jesus being, Protestants drew in realistic genre. Dutch masters turned to secular subjects, in full accordance with the Protestant notion that a person should not create "false idols". It was the first impact of Christianity in the arts of Netherlands. For example, work of Frans Hals «Shrovetide Revelers» painted in 1623, shows us usual life of people celebrating Shrovetide. Secondly, one of the regulations of Protestantism was being a moderate about spending money to food and clothes. And, this rule influenced to the arts of Netherlands, too. Protestant art was art for ordinary people. Townspeople support their artists and are proud of them. Dutch artists hadn’t a lot of orders. They did painting for their risk, being hopeful to sell it in market or fair. Thirdly, Protestantism touched Dutch realism, too. According to Visual-arts-cork (n.d.), «Dutch Realist Genre Painting – paintings in real life genre, containing a Protestant or moral message». For example, in the work of Johannes Vermeer «The art of Painting» (1665-1668), we can see map divided to 2 regions: Netherland and Flandreau. Also, there are a lot of objet symbolizing Catholicism and persecution. So, I make 3 arguments with facts, that proves my idea. Thus, I can say confidently that Protestantism is positively influenced on arts of Netherlands in 17th century.
